January and February are prime steelhead fishing months. If you want the best chance for catching these exciting fish, this is the best time of year.
Weather tends to be rainy but with lots of gorgeous days in between. Cabin is perfect for rain--lots of books and puzzles, a warm fire in the fireplace, a great hot tub...and sleep to the sound of rain on the roof.
Steelhead fishing continues into March and April but requires more hiking as many of the steelhead are now in the upper reaches of the Middle and South Fork of the Smith. Wildflowers are starting to emerge. The redwood trails of the area are barely used--so you practically have the place to yourself.
No fishing on the Smith in May but if you want to fish, you can't beat spring salmon fishing on the Rogue--about 1.5 hrs away.
This time of year is especially nice for those partial to wildflowers and having the redwood trails to yourselves.
Weather is mild with rains rare.
June, July and August are great at the cabin. The river is perfect for canoing, swimming, and trout fishing--with a nice hot-tub to soak in afterwards. A fire pit on the patio is perfect for s'mores and drift wood covered beaches just 20 minutes away are great for an evening around the campfire. There are many trails through an ancient redwood forest just minutes from the cabin. If you like blackberries, mid August through September is when you want to come. Day time temperatures in high 70's or more; evenings cool.
September & October are our "Indian Summer" months. Warm days and cool nights. For fisherman, this is when salmon season starts at the mouth of the Smith--using 3/4 oz Kastmasters on the outgoing tide. Fishing upriver depends on water flow but if it's high enough, great salmon pool just below the cabin. Few tourists around this time of year so you will have the parks to yourselves. River still great for canoeing.
November & December is the beginning of salmon and steelhead season. Salmon arrive after the river rises from a couple good rains. Salmon season is usually in full swing by the mid to late November and is pretty much over by late December. Steelhead first arrive in early December and peak from late January through February,.
